From Enforcer to Record Holder: Tiger Williams and his 7-Second Strike

By the 1986-87 NHL season, the career of rugged forward Dave “Tiger” Williams was beginning to wind down. Known far more for his toughness than his scoring touch, Williams still managed to produce one of the most memorable moments in Los Angeles Kings history during that campaign.

Williams finished that season with 16 goals and a staggering 358 penalty minutes, a career high that reflected the gritty style that made him one of hockey’s most famous enforcers. Yet it was one of those goals, not the penalty minutes, that secured him a place in the Kings record book.

On February 14, 1987, the Kings hosted the Hartford Whalers at the Forum in Inglewood. Valentine’s Day offered little love for Hartford goaltender Mike Liut. Just seven seconds after the opening faceoff, Williams surprised everyone by beating Liut to give Los Angeles an instant lead. The goal, assisted by Bernie Nicholls and Dean Kennedy, was Williams’ 12th of the season.

That quick strike still stands as the fastest goal to start a game in Los Angeles Kings franchise history. After that lightning start, Williams stayed off the scoresheet and unusually, out of the penalty box for the remainder of the night.

The Kings went on to defeat the Whalers 5-2, fueled by three-point performances from offensive stars Marcel Dionne and Luc Robitaille.

Interestingly, Williams’ 358 penalty minutes during the 1986-87 season also stood as a Kings franchise record for several years. That mark was eventually surpassed by Marty McSorley, who recorded 399 penalty minutes during the 1992-93 campaign.

Williams finished the 1986-87 season with Los Angeles and returned briefly the following year, appearing in just two games for the Kings before closing out his NHL career with the Hartford Whalers, playing the final 26 games of his long and colorful run in the league.

Wendel Clark Erupts For 4 Goals In Early-Season Shootout vs Buffalo

For Toronto Maple Leafs power forward Wendel Clark, the 1986-87 NHL season began with fireworks. After scoring once in the season opener against Montreal, Clark exploded for four goals in Game 2, all against Buffalo Sabres goalie Darren Puppa, marking the first four-goal game of his career.

Unfortunately, his hot streak didn’t last. Following this dominant night, Clark managed just one goal over his next seven games. But for one October evening, the Leafs’ young leader was unstoppable.

The game opened with Mike Foligno putting Buffalo ahead early on Ken Wregget, but Clark answered with two quick goals. Foligno tied it again with his second, only for Wendel to complete the hat trick before the end of the first period. Gilbert Perreault’s late goal made it 3-3 after a wild opening frame.

The scoring show continued through the second and third. Despite Clark’s heroics, the Leafs trailed 5-4 after two periods, with Wilf Paiement (a former Leaf himself) scoring twice for Buffalo and Steve Thomas cutting the gap for Toronto. Clark’s fourth goal at 9:44 of the third tied things up 5-5 and that’s how it stayed, as overtime solved nothing.

It was a night for offense, not defense:

• Gary Leeman assisted on all four Clark goals for a four-point performance.

• Paiement and Perreault both finished with three points for the Sabres.

• Goaltending struggled on both ends: Puppa allowed five on 25 shots, Wregget five on 23.

Two Goals in Six Seconds: Turgeon’s Historic Whalers Moment

On March 28, 1987, Sylvain Turgeon snapped out of a scoring slump in dramatic fashion for the Hartford Whalers. Facing Mario Lemieux and the Pittsburgh Penguins at the Hartford Civic Center, Turgeon delivered one of the most memorable performances in franchise history.

After scoring just one goal in his previous eight games, Turgeon opened the scoring late in the first period, beating Pat Riggin unassisted. The second period turned into a wild offensive showcase, with six goals scored in just over five minutes.

Lemieux tied the game at 13:39 with his 53rd goal of the season, but Turgeon responded instantly. Just 20 seconds later, he notched his second of the night. Six seconds after that, he completed the hat trick. The two lightning-quick tallies remain a Whalers franchise record for the fastest two goals by a single player. Even after the team relocated and became the Carolina Hurricanes, the closest anyone has come was Ray Whitney’s two goals in 31 seconds back in 2007.

The Whalers went on to win 5-4, thanks to a clutch goal from captain Ron Francis. Turgeon himself fired 10 of Hartford’s 22 total shots, while goaltender Mike Liut made 19 saves for the victory.

Turgeon went on to play 669 regular season and 36 playoff games in the NHL with the Whalers, New Jersey Devils, Montreal Canadiens, and Ottawa Senators. Twice he hit the 40-goal plateau in Hartford, peaking with a career-best 45 in 1985-86.
